Finding the Perfect Mechanic in Seven Questions

Finding the Perfect Mechanic

Every car, no matter how well-built, needs maintenance from time to time, and between the Back to School hustle and busy Fall schedules your time is more valuable than ever. It’s important to find a trustworthy auto shop to keep you on the move. Here are some questions from your friends at Heidebreicht Chevrolet to make sure your mechanic makes the grade:

1. Is the mechanic certified to work on your vehicle? This is probably the most important thing to look for. Taking your 2016 Chevy Volt to someone who isn’t trained to repair hybrid vehicles is a recipe for disaster. Check your warranty, too; some require that any repairs are done by certified technicians.

2. Are there warranties on repairs and parts? Reputable mechanics stand by their work. Look for a warranty that covers parts and labor, the longer the better. Many new cars come with warranties, so your mechanic should also know how to work with your existing coverage to avoid over-charging you. Be sure to read the warranty so you know what to do if you need to use it.

3. Will the mechanic bill your insurance or do you need to pay up front? Having repairs covered by insurance involves a lot of paperwork, and there can be rules about what kinds of parts must be used in different circumstances. Try to find a mechanic who can handle all the paperwork for you. As a bonus, most of these shops bill your insurance directly instead of asking you to cover the invoice on the spot.

4. Does the mechanic offer several repair options? Often there is more than one approach to solving car problems. A good mechanic will suggest several possible solutions along with a professional recommendation. If a repair can only safely be done one way, the mechanic should explain why and give a detailed estimate of what the repair entails.

5. Can you get a loaner vehicle from the repair shop? Major repairs take time to complete, especially if body work or painting is involved. Look for shops that offer free or low-cost loaner vehicles to bridge the time you’ll be without a car. For shorter repairs, ask about a courtesy shuttle to take you to work or home.

6. Is the shop organized and well run? A certain amount of grease is expected in a garage, but it shouldn’t look like a landfill. Peek your head in the service area to make sure other vehicles are being treated the way you’d like yours to be. Also, check out public spaces like showrooms and waiting areas. There should be somewhere to sit comfortably with your family while waiting to pick up a vehicle. If these areas are clean and well-maintained it’s a sign that the staff takes pride in their work. The better repair shops keep coffee, water, and even light snacks available to make long waits easier.

7. Can the counter staff answer your questions, or will they get a mechanic if they can’t? Though some repair shops let their technicians rotate through counter duty, most have a receptionist or salesperson out front. These people should be able to field administrative questions and the more common repair issues. For technical questions, see if they’re willing to ask a mechanics for you.
