1. Sea Life Michigan Aquarium

One of the region’s most amazing places to visit is the impressive Sea Life Michigan Aquarium in Auburn Hills, a short 17-mile drive away. Michigan’s largest aquarium displays a spectacular 500 fish species in the underwater tunnel. The aquarium has a Touchpool where you can touch sea stars and anemones and a 360-degree schooling exhibit where you can watch hundreds of pilchards and flagtails.

You can even stroll along the sandy Stingray Beach and search for baby sharks between the rocks, catch glimpses of stingrays, and watch colorful schools of fish. Sea Life Michigan Aquarium is at 4316 Baldwin Road in Auburn Hills and is open Monday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturdays to 7 p.m.

2. Troy Historic Village

Take the road to Troy, about 21 miles away, and stroll down the winding paths through Troy Historic Village. Take a closer look at the collection of 11 historic buildings to learn more about the people who lived here between the 1840s and 1920s. There are well-preserved examples of 1832 Georgian and Greek-style homes, the beautiful chapel built in 1827, the 1832 general store, and the 1837 Niles Barnard House.

Wander into the 1877 Poppleton brick schoolhouse and watch a blacksmith tend his craft as it was done in the 1850s. The Troy Historic Village is at 60 W Wattles Road in Troy and is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. all year round.

3. Belle Isle Park

The magnificent Belle Isle Park in Detroit is just a 43-mile drive. The park stretches over a 987-acre island with breathtaking woodlands and three picturesque lakes. Go on a stroll through the scenic gardens filled with exotic plants at the historic Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and see over 1,000 fish species at the Belle Isle Aquarium, the oldest aquarium in the country.

Spend time at the Belle Isle Nature Zoo, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, and the 1929 Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse, the only one in the country with a light constructed of marble. You can also spend the day hiking through the beautiful woods, paddling and fishing in the lakes, and practicing your swing at the golf range. Belle Isle Park is at 99 Pleasure Drive in Detroit and is open every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

4. Sterling State Park

The one-and-a-half-hour drive to Monroe to spend the day in the 1,300-acre Sterling State Park, the only state park in Michigan on Lake Erie in Monroe. Enjoying a plethora of exciting outdoor activities make it well worth the trip. Hike down seven miles of scenic nature trails and enjoy spectacular views of the lake. Fish, paddle, and boat in one of the three lagoons, sunbathe on the one-mile-long sandy beach, and enjoy a bite to eat in the shade under the trees.
